The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. We are still looking at the Person of the Holy Spirit, using Isaiah’s description in these verses of the sevenfold Spirit. Today we look at his FOURTH description, i.e. the “Spirit of counsel”. This depiction is absolutely paramount to whom the Spirit is. In the New Testament one of his designations is “Paraclete”, a Greek word that can be translated with “Comforter”, or even “Encourager” of “Motivator”. These are functions that we could attribute to the Spirit as “Counsellor”, The Holy Spirit is God’s voice in our thoughts – the One who shows the way, and goes before us, the One who illuminates Scripture and applies its truths, the One who admonishes and reprimands, but who also comforts and encourages. The One who brings God into the situation. How blocked and deaf we are that we don’t hear his voice! How loud is the noise of the world, that we don’t hear his counsel! And how wayward and lost even God’s children become because of that! Spirit of Counsel: we yearn, we hunger and thirst for your comfort and guidance. Amen.
