0104 Isaiah 11:1-2 The Spirit of the LORD

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. The Lord promises his disciples the Holy Spirit. We are going to spend some time looking more specifically at who the Spirit is, for which we are going to make use of this sevenfold description of Him by Isaiah. Also elsewhere in the Word we read about the Spirit as the “seven Spirits” before the throne of God. We’ll start today with the FIRST of Isaiah’s descriptions, i.e. the “Spirit of the Lord”. The Holy Spirit is intimately God Himself. In the Bible we read about Him as the Spirit of “Jahwe” (as here) or as the Spirit of God, or the Spirit of Christ. And yet: the Spirit is not the Father, and not Christ. He also is not the Father’s or Christ’s influence or power in the world. He is a Person! The following is a distinction that might be of help: • The Father is God above us, our Creator and Sustainer • The Son is God with us, our Saviour and Master • The Spirit is God in us, our Equipper and Motivator One God, three Persons. Meditate upon it and try to understand something about God with your heart – not with the mind. That’s impossible! Lord, thank you for your Spirit. Amen.
