The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Rom 8:16 ESV
We experience God’s voice in different ways: mainly through his Word, but we can also learn to discern our circumstances. Then there is the inner voice in our heart of which Paul speaks hear – the “inner testimony” of the Holy Spirit. It comes to us as a sudden impression or a distinct knowledge – out of the blue, not part of our usual thought process, not reasoned. Sometimes, as we wait on God’s guidance, we receive an image, a picture that conveys meaning. Simultaneously comes the conviction that THIS is from God, that HE has spoken, or a feeling of breakthrough, surprise – “a-ha”! Of course this type of thing brings with it its own dangers, and we do make (many) mistakes, but at a next time we’ll warn about those. Let’s for now just confirm that God speaks – we must learn to listen!
Good Shepherd, I want to grow in discerning your voice – with wisdom and maturity. Lead me on, Lord! Amen.
Practice to hear God’s voice!
