But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Mat 6:17-18 ESV
Jesus makes it clear that outward religion alone isn’t what the Fathers asks. To do religious things or even to live circumspectly, but with a heart that’s far from God is NOT true religion. However, when our heart is right with God, our religion will be God-filled and pure. Remember, Jesus was never against traditional worship as such. On the contrary, his own worship as a Jew was filled with much ritual and symbolism, with fixed prayers and prayer times, and different fasts and feasts. “Worship” is just as empty when it’s all good intention and love for God, but never finds a form in our behaviour. No, content needs a form! It’s therefore important that we develop a practical spiritual life, spiritual rhythms in which we have real time for prayer, God’s Word, fellowship and so on. It’s also beautiful to flow with the spiritual traditions of our church and our family or to punctuate our walk with God with practices or symbols that have special meaning to us. Just as long as it comes from a HEART that worships!
Lord, help me to develop a spiritual life that flows from a worshiping heart, one that will build a relationship with you! Amen.
Let your worship flow from the inside out!
