Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephes 4:29 ESV
As believers our words are important, because they testify of the One we serve. Words also have a powerful effect on others. Here, Paul says our words must build others up, it must “give grace”. This is a wonderful truth! In the church it is believed that the sacraments add grace to our lives, that it strengthens us for our walk with God. If our words also “give grace” it means that our words can be sacramental, holy rituals. They can carry God right into a situation, they can empower, build up and heal! Isn’t it a fact that a conversation with some people can energize and inspire you, make you feel alive and strong, while speaking with others can drain you of your strength and hope? Speak life into situations and into lives – not death! If you make sure that your words correspond to God’s Word, THAT will be the case!
Father, let my words bear grace, strength, hope – life! – to all who hear. Amen.
Speak life to others, not death!
