2201 Can we excuse ourselves?

Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Mat 6:9-10 ESV

It’s a fact that man’s behaviour is damaging the earth. Yet, many people ignore it – they either do not believe it or do not care. They want others to solve the problem, just as long as they don’t have to change their lifestyle. Many Christians are the same! Some reason that the earth will pass away, anyway, that they’re on their way to heaven or that we should anyway not become too attached to this earth. Such arguments may sound valid, but they’re not. The fact that the earth will be destroyed eventually does not mean that WE must destroy it now! It’s also not to the earth that we mustn’t get attached to, but the sinful world. Let’s remember that God’s kingdom should come HERE, that his will be done HERE, “on earth as it is in heaven”. No, we haven’t actually got an excuse. To cause damage to God’s good creation is the result of sin, as it was since the fall. It can never be anything else.

Father, it is wrong for us to harm the earth. We weren’t aware of all the implications, but now we are. Forgive us! Amen.
