Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him? Gen 49:9 ESV
When Jacob blessed his sons, he often gave them a meaningful image to identify with: Judah is a lion, Naphtali is a deer, Joseph a tree that bears fruit and so on. It encapsulates their identity in one powerful symbol. We have now already described your identity in God as that of a beloved, of a child and of a follower, but you can also ask God for something deeply personal. The following exercise is often done in spiritual direction. Enter into a quiet time with God. After a time of prayer and focus ask the following question clearly” “I am like a…” Let it hang in the silence as you wait on the Holy Spirit to impress some image on your heart. A tree, a stream, a star are some of the images that people often experience. Be patient. Do not force anything – it’s merely an exercise to discern something about ourselves, something that will give us insight and peace. If you feel that the Holy Spirit has shown you something significant, some a-ha, be grateful. Ponder it and work with it. If nothing particularly happened, then it doesn’t matter. God works in different ways!
Holy Spirit, help me to understand my unique identity and calling. Amen.
