God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. Acts 2:24 ESV
After his eventful life Jesus was put to death on a cross. For us, though, Jesus’ death was no defeat or low point. No, his death was the climax, the purpose of his life! The New Testament teaches clearly that the cross was a victory over the enemy. The early church saw it like this: when Jesus died he descended into hell (actually, Hades) and bound all its rulers and powers. He specifically defeated the devil and took from him the keys of his abode and of death itself. After that he rose from the dead because no devil could keep him there. In that way Jesus opened a way through death, by which his followers could escape through death into life! That’s why the early church called Jesus Christus Victor: Christ, the Victor! Do you understand that you – with your small life and your small problems – are forever safe, completely safe in the care of such a great Conqueror? You are! Why then fear?
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for conquering death. Thank you for opening the way for me to follow you into eternal life! Amen.
Stand in the victory of Jesus!
