2330 The cross as the middle

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. 1 Tim 2:5-6a ESV

The cross of Christ is the central event in all of history. It stands in the middle of everything! What do we mean by this? Take note:

  • the cross stands between God and man. Jesus Christ, the Mediator, came to stand between God and us. On the cross he took the full consequence of sin on himself, so that we (who accepted it by faith) could receive God’s full outpouring of love;
  • the cross stands in the middle of history. The Old Testament, in every respect, pointed ahead to Christ and his cross: its law, its circumcision, its sacrifices, Sabbaths and feasts. Everything was fulfilled in Christ. On the cross the true Lamb truly atoned, bringing true Sabbath rest, introducing the true blessings of the law. Now, in the New Testament, we live with the benefits of the cross: grace, boldness, love, the Holy Spirit, abundance!

Yes, the cross defines history and defines HIS story. No wonder it’s the central symbol of our faith. Wear it with pride, but more importantly: demonstrate what it means!

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the cross of Calvary. Thank you for what it means – in history, in the world, in my life! Amen.

Centre your life on the cross!
