For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isa 9:6 ESV
Jesus was the Christ, the promised Messiah. The messiah was expected to be a peacemaker, to bring “peace on earth” – just as the angels sang at Jesus’ birth. Did Christ bring this peace? Let’s answer as follows:
- The Messianic Era started with Jesus, but it has not ended yet. The kingdom of God came, but it’s still coming every day and will one day come finally. It’s true therefore, that we still suffer turmoil and conflict, but when the Messiah is done with his work, peace will reign on earth. Remember that Christ also commanded us to forgive one another and work for peace in this world.
- In the meanwhile, though, Christ has worked even bigger peace: peace in the heart, peace with God, peace that surpasses understanding – peace IN the trouble and turmoil! This peace, inner peace, everlasting peace, is even more important.
So – is Jesus Christ the Prince of Peace? Oh, definitely! In fact, he is our only hope for peace, ever.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the peace that you brought. Help me to share your peace with others. Amen.
Accept the peace of Jesus!
