For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6 ESV
The third name with which Isaiah described the coming Messiah was “Everlasting Father” (Abi-ad). Yes, the “child” that would be born would also be a “father,” right from birth! Not just father, but Father-forever! With this we understand that Christ was God, but it also describes the character of the Messiah. In the Semitic world the father kept the family together. It was his family, carrying and perpetuating his name. A father cared for his family with great commitment, protected them and guided them, while they respected and followed him.
Take note: as believers we live in the household of God; we are part of His family. Sometimes we disagree or quarrel, but that can happen between brothers and sisters. We’re family! We look after each other because that’s what families do. We attend the meetings because families often get together. Yes, we need more of a “we-mentality,” less of an “I-mentality”. We’re family! That’s what Father wants.
Heavenly Father, thank you for coming to us in Christ Jesus. Help us, as Your children, to live in Your household lovingly and loyally. Help us to make Your identity our own, to live out Your values. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
