In Practice Devotions

In Practice - "everyday faith"

I decided to make the most practical series of meditations of my life! We will talk about how Christians eat and drink, drive in traffic, behave at work, deal with their stress (and temper) and much more. The reasons for this series are the following:

  • Our devotions are often very spiritual, for some even "super-spiritual". Sometimes, Christians look for something more "practical and useful" (I will put in brackets and will bite my tongue... :-) )
  • An inquiry among our readers indicated that real, practical, everyday challenges are a problem : how should they react to a taxi swerving in front of them, what should they do with the beggars in the streets - things like that. A member told Rev. Cassie Carstens once, "Your sermons only help me on Sundays. When do you preach sermons that will help me from Mondays to Fridays?" (or something like that, I quote freely). Rev. Cassie then began to preach about money, spending time, the work environment, marriage and sex - the real practical nitty-gritty, the "ordinary life". Do we not say that the spiritual life is the ordinary life, which we live spiritually? That's exactly what it's all about!
  • The Bible is absolutely full of similar advice. The Law of Moses prescribes ordinary life in absolute detail, the wisdom literature (e.g. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, James) is full of everyday topics (education, women, hard work, money - even tending after your animals), and Paul also gives extensive advice on eating and drinking, marriage, the government and so on. In Scripture, "repentance" means getting your life in line with God's will!
  • Finally, I am a qualified life coach, and our meditations and courses often deal with general life issues.

Take note, I cannot prescribe how you should act in every situation, because I am not the Holy Spirit. (Sometimes I'll pray for a taxi driver myself and other times I'll honk at him until he's gone around the block!) However, I can give you the Scriptural principles so you know what God expects; then, the Holy Spirit must lead you in each specific situation.

Let's make our faith practical!

This series starts on 1 April 2024 and will run toward the end of 2025.
